1782 Holland Receives Adams Medal, SP62
    Betts-603, Sharply Struck and Prooflike

1782 Medal Holland Receives Adams, Betts-603, SP62 PCGS. 45 mm. 448.6 gn. The Latin legends of this Dutch medal declare America as "a free sister, acknowledged by solemn decree April 19, 1782." The design depicts America as a Native American woman, bestowed with a Liberty Cap by a Netherlands maiden dressed in armor. A lion and unicorn represent the defeated England. Future U.S. President John Adams served as Minister to the Netherlands, and commissioned the medal. Engraved by Johann Georg Holtzhey. Lightly and attractively toned golden-brown and aquamarine. The open areas remain brilliant and reflective. The high relief design is well struck. The reverse field displays moderate marks appropriate for the designated grade.
Ex: Dodson and Collier Collections (Bowers and Merena, 6/1984), lot 2734.
