    1783 'Communi Consensu' Medal, MS61
    White Metal Striking

1783 Communi Consensu Medal MS61 PCGS. White metal, 44 mm. Betts-unlisted. Though rather obscure today, the Communi Consensu medal was known to 19th century numismatists. In the December 1866 edition of the American Journal of Numismatics, the Secretary of the Boston Numismatic Society described seeing the "large Libertas Americana in silver" -- what today's collectors call the "Libertas Americana" -- as well as the "smaller medal, with the reverse 'Communi Consensu.'" This is a white metal striking of the "smaller medal," which has Minerva and a France-and-Liberty allegory with words LIBERTAS AMERICANA above for the two sides. The surfaces have dappled pale gray and gold-green colors with a cylinder of reddish-gray through the medal appearing as dots at the lower obverse and reverse.
