    Description

1556 Philip II Betts-1 in Silver
Rare King of the New World Medal

Betts-1. 1556 Philip II, King of the New World. Silver, cast, chased. VF+. 35.4 mm, 1.3 mm thick at lower rim, 13.7 gm. Medal turn. Style of Florence-born engraver Gianpaolo Poggini (1518-ca. 1582), presenting an armored bust left of Philip II with Latin titles King of the Spains (plural) and of the New Western World within a narrow, plain raised rim. The reverse honors his father, Emperor Charles V (who first reigned as Charles I of Spain), with a laureate armored bust right and titles Caesar and Augustus, all within a beaded outer rim. Pleasing silver-gray toning; a faint edge bruise is seen at 5 o'clock. A thoroughly pleasing example of the first medal listed by C. Wyllys Betts.

    John W. Adams Commentary
"Cast with fields chased. Unsigned. An especially rare variety, with no appearance in Ford. The plain rim on the obverse is paired with a beaded rim on the reverse, suggesting that two different artisans were at work here. Rounded rims."
    Ex: C.O.I.N. '84 (Ponterio & Associates, 6/1984), lot 632; CICF (Ponterio & Associates, 4/1997), lot 6.

Betts-1 through 12 are collectively known as the NOVI ORBIS, King of the New World medals. Adams writes: "The only comparable offering of NOVI ORBIS medals in modern times was that in Ford XIII. The medals herein are more extensive than Ford and, on balance, of higher quality."
