    Description

1701 American Aloe Plant, Mint State
    Betts-107, White Metal

Betts-107. 1701 American Aloe Plant. White Metal. Mint State. 43.6 mm, 26.0 gm. Obverse signed by Christian Wermuth of Gotha depicting an agave blooming in a garden with hills present in the background. The reverse text refers to the American aloe plant in the garden of Frederic II, Duke of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, the plant having resided there for thirty-three years and thriving, which was seen as a good omen and was linked to the virility of the duke. Prooflike fields add to the visual appeal of this well struck and beautifully preserved piece.
