    Description

    1720 John Law, XF
    Betts-118, Silver

Betts-118. 1720 John Law. Silver. XF. 35.1 mm, 15.4 gm. Although unsigned, this medal is the work of Christian Wermuth. The obverse of this lovely medal depicts John Law holding a bellows from which certificates are flying through the air. The translation of the text is, "Who, in his avarice, will allow himself to be carried away by this wind?" The reverse illustrates a dog crossing a stream by means of a bridge and snapping at his own shadow in the water, causing him to drop a bundle of billets. The legend translates as, "Shall not Aesop's dog teach you a lesson?" Sky-blue, gold, and peach toning adds to the visual appeal of this piece retaining areas of luster. None of the minor marks poses any distraction.
    Purchased from Tim Millet (12/2000).
