    Description

    1720 John Law, XF
    Betts-123, Silver

Betts-123. 1720 John Law. Silver. XF. 32.4 mm, 10.9 gm. Wermuth engraved the obverse and likely the reverse as well. The obverse with a half-length portrait of John Law repeats on this piece. However, the text on the reverse states, "Because the world wishes to be deceived it takes delight no longer in lotteries, and so purchases shares for tickets in all directions according to its present desire." Hints of lavender, green-blue, gold, and rose appear on this example. Several wispy die cracks are present at the lower obverse and upper reverse on this lovely medal.
Ex: Harmer, Rooke (11/1969), lot 326; Ted Craige Estate (10/1982); John J. Ford, Jr. (Stack's, 1/2006), lot 597.
