    Description

    1720 John Law, VF-XF
    Betts-132, White Metal

Betts-132. 1720 John Law. White Metal. VF-XF. 44.2 mm, 27.6 gm. Unsigned. The central obverse features the portrait of John Law, also appearing as the obverse for Betts-117. The reverse text translates as, "Praise to you (Law) who art also an imposter, you have escaped the eager ravens" and "This is the result with those who, for the sake of increasing their money, eagerly seek for moneyed papers, under the names of stocks; haters of literary papers, despisers of honest money. Instead of gaining an increased property they win the censure of their creditors; paper instead of money; snares instead of panelled ceilings; and while they hear not Paul, but Saul, they follow Judas, and with him become a long letter." The high points of the design and reverse rims reveal areas of wear on this piece. A depression is present in the center of Law's forehead and a few small areas of pest appear.
    Purchased from Richard Margolis (11/1985).
