    Description

    1720 John Law, VF
    Betts-135, Silver

Betts-135. 1720 John Law. Silver. VF. 32.3 mm, 10.2 gm. Engraved by Christian Wermuth. The central obverse design features a ploughman using a whip to drive two horses forward under a cloudy sky, with accompanying text that translates as, "The sun appeared from behind the clouds while Law went away from Paris on the winter solstice of the moon, Dec. 19, 20, 1721. The reverse is comprised solely of text meaning, "An evil hope proves a snare instead of increased riches, to an avaricious man." Attractively toned, this piece includes shades of yellow-gold, violet, light blue, sea-green, and plum. The high points of the design exhibit wear.
