    Description

    1736 Jernegan Cistern, VF
    Betts-169, Silver

Betts-169. 1736 Jernegan Cistern. Silver. VF. 38.8 mm, 20.5 gm. Obverse signed by John Sigismund Tanner of Saxe-Gotha. He moved to England in 1728 and became the Chief Engraver at the Mint in 1741. Reverse unsigned. The obverse design features Pallas standing amidst the emblems representing glory, art, and industry. The legend is BOTH HANDS FILL'D FOR BRITAIN. In exergue, GEORGE REIGNING. The reverse depicts Queen Caroline wearing a crown and holding a sceptre. She is watering a plantation of young palmettos. The legend reads, GROWING ARTS ADORN EMPIRE. CAROLINE PROTECTING 1736 appears in exergue. Goldsmith Henry Jernegan issued the medals to purchasers of tickets for a lottery of a silver vase. It is believed 30,000 of the medals were struck. Toning, in shades of green-blue and orange-gold, appears on this example along with tiny splashes of yellow and red. Scattered marks and hairlines are present, but are not overly distracting. The obverse reveals faint evidence of a rusted die.
