    Holland Versus Spain

    Betts-21. 1602 Rivalry of Holland and Spain. Silver, cast, gilt. VF, once mounted. 51.8 mm, 2.6 mm thick, 46.9 gm. Obverse depicts the capture of Spanish galleon Santiago at St. Helena by two Dutch ships, Latin They Do what Seems Doable. Reverse shows spirited horse symbolizing Philip II springing from globe followed by Zeeland lion, defiant Latin legend, One World does not Suffice, Wherever you Leap, I will Follow. Tournai castle mint mark, loop removed at 12 o'clock.

    "Horse (Philip II) leaping into the New World, pursued by the lion of Zeeland. The Spanish treasure ship Sint Jacob was captured off the island of St. Helena by two merchant ships of the State of Zeeland. This medal was commissioned by the owners of the two ships, who captured over one million guilders in jewels and silks."
