    Description

1559 Betts-3 Peace of Cambrai Medal
    Extremely Rare in Silver

Betts-3. 1559 Peace of Cambrai. Silver, struck. XF. 40.4 mm, 3.3 mm thick at lower rim, 42.7 gm. Medal turn. By Gianpaolo Poggini, with the artist's signature below the truncation of the high-relief armored bust of Philip II, facing left in a circle. Reverse shows a standing draped figure of Peace holding a cornucopia as she ignites a pile of discarded weapons before the closed Temple of Janus within the Latin legend Peace Established on Land and Sea, the Roman numeral date MDLIX (1559) in exergue. Pleasingly thick and heavy planchet; smooth and reflective fields complement the splendidly detailed devices. Describing lot 662 in Part XIII of the John J. Ford Jr. Collection, the cataloger revealed that Ford had only seen one silver specimen, but the medal offered there was bronze. Here is a struck silver specimen of Betts-3 that was not found by the diligent Ford.

    John W. Adams Commentary
"Struck on a thick, polished flan (probably rolled). A true work of art, signed 'J. PAVL. POG. F.' Extremely rare in this metal. Rounded edges."
    Ex: Morton & Eden (4/2002), lot 643.
