    1747 Lord Anson Circumnavigation, XF
    Betts-382, 24-Karat Gold

Betts-382. 1747 Lord Anson Circumnavigation. Gold (24K). XF. 43.4 mm, 41.4 gm. 19.2 specific gravity. Obverse signed by Thomas Pingo (1714-1776), an English medallist. During his career, Pingo was employed as assistant-engraver at the Royal Mint in London. He served in that capacity from 1771 until his death in 1776 and was succeeded by his son Lewis. Another son, John, also became a medallist.

Of the approximately 50 examples of the Lord Anson Circumnavigation medals believed to have been struck in gold, the number of survivors today is estimated to be fewer than ten.

The obverse design commemorates Anson's defeat of the French fleet led by Admiral de la Jonquiére off Cape Finisterre in May 1747. Admiral Anson, aboard the Prince George, led 14 British ships against a convoy of 30 French ships during the War of the Austrian Succession. The battle lasted for five hours. As a result of his victory, Anson was promoted to Vice Admiral.

The reverse celebrates his voyage around the world, from September 1740 until June 1744. His capture of a treasure-bearing Spanish galleon led to his promotion to Vice-Admiral. Anson later built a town in North Carolina, Ansonburg, and the county of Anson is named for him. Close examination of this piece reveals shades of green, red, and pink. The rim displays minuscule marks and a thin diagonal scratch appears below Anson's chin.
Ex: Bowers and Ruddy (7/1981), lot 2677.
