Sharp Betts-403 1758 Boscawen at Louisbourg Medal

Betts-403. 1758 Boscawen at Louisbourg. Pinchbeck, tinned. About Uncirculated. An especially high grade example of this large sized Boscawen medal. Rich glossy golden bronze on the obverse, mellowed to brown in the fields, while a good bit of "silvering" remains on the reverse, particularly on the devices. Some old faint pinscratches are present at Boscawen's collar and into the field below his chin, a few hints of shallow old corrosion within his cuirass, some light hairlines in the upper reverse field. Despite these minor under-magnification flaws, the sharpness is superb and the visual appeal is excellent. Tinned (i.e. "silvered") specimens are scarce, though this seems to be the only Boscawen variety that appears with such a surface treatment. Ford also had a tinned example; it brought the highest price of any Boscawen medal in his collection. 40.5 mm, 193.4 grains.
    Ex: Baldwin's (9/2006), lot 1335.
