    Description

    Original Red 1758 Louisbourg Taken
    Medal in Bronze, Betts-410

Betts-410. 1758 Louisbourg Taken. Bronze. About Uncirculated. Abundant remnants of original mint color persist, especially at peripheries, elsewhere toned down to pleasing rosy brown. Strong reflectivity remains on both sides, excellent eye appeal, right side of obverse shows hairlines from where a spot was removed right of the standing sailor. Incredibly sharply struck, with abundant horizontal die polish lines visible on both sides. Late die state, with a fine crack from L of LOUISBOURG to the two-step rim and another at second C of MDCCLVIII; neither is present on the silver and gold strikings. The thick planchet and fine preservation of this specimen suggests it was a medallic strike, intended for a cabinet rather than a uniformed chest. 43.9 mm, 586.4 grains.
