    Description

Silver 1758 Louisbourg Taken Medal, Betts-411

Betts-411. 1758 Louisbourg Taken. Silver. WILLIAM PITT ADMINISTRING edge. Choice Extremely Fine. Lustrous and fully reflective, brilliant silver gray but for some light toning in deep gold, violet, and blue at the rims, most prominent at upper right obverse. Hairlined from a long ago cleaning and showing scattered fine marks in the fields, a bit handled but very attractive. A rim cud on the reverse from 12:00 to 3:00 gives the impression of longer denticles there; they are simply in higher relief. Double struck, as were all of the high relief SPAC medals, with only slight separation between strikes. Signed by Kirk on both sides. Presumably, these dies were produced to replace the cracked dies (Betts-413 and 414) that were prepared by John Pingo. A very rare medal. This Betts number was not represented in silver in LaRiviere. Ford owned one, ex Reford Collection, which had the same edge. 40.7 mm, 404.8 grains
    Ex: Jim King (9/1967).
