Broken Die Bronze Louisbourg Taken Medal, Betts-414

Betts-414. 1758 Louisbourg Taken. Bronze. Reverse die broken. Extremely Fine. Struck from the obverse of Betts-413, but in an earlier state, muled to a totally different reverse. Betts got a few things wrong about Betts-414. First, the obverse is not just "similar to last," it's identical. Second, the die state of the obverse here is earlier than on Betts-413, so realistically their order in the book should be reverse. Finally, he points to the position of the wreath near M of the date as the sole difference between the reverses of 413 and 414. In actuality, the central devices are also significantly different, with the angle of the wings on Victory's head much closer to horizontal on this one, more vertical on Betts-414. Betts knew of two of these, both in lead; the existence of a soft metal impression in the British Museum but not a copper one suggests that this die broke very early and efforts were made to get impressions somehow without injuring the die further. This example shows a break from above 9:00 to 6:00 on the reverse, with the terraced break zig-zagging in and out of the word LOUISBOURG. The obverse is golden tan with darker toning at the peripheries, probably cleaned long ago but retoning, while the reverse is even and appealing dark chocolate brown with good gloss despite some very fine granularity visible under a glass. Collaring mark or "witness line" on edge below 3:00 relative to the obverse.
Christopher Eimer, in his magisterial work on the Pingo family (The Pingo Family & Medal Making in 18th Century Britain), listed this die variety only in soft metal (i.e. lead). That Eimer did not know of a copper specimen when his book was published suggests its great rarity. 39.5 mm, 498.7 mm.
