    Magnificent Victories of 1758 Medal
    Betts-416, Apparently Unique in Gold
    A Trophy

Betts-416. Victories of 1758. Gold. Choice Mint State. Majestic deeply reflective medium yellow gold, as bright and flashy as the day it was minted, one of the single most physically impressive Betts medals in existence. Sharp, fully detailed, only the most minor of marks and light scattered hairlines, a wonder of fine preservation for such a large, heavy medal. This medal was clearly produced as an exemplar of the coiner's art, with deeply mirrored fields, a polished edge, and a remarkably bold strike. Beyond its physical beauty, this piece is an unparalleled rarity in the series. Among the British Victories medals of 1758, 1759, and 1762, this is the single known example from any of the dies to be struck in gold. Betts did not list this in gold, nor did Medallic Illustrations.
We have noted before that any Betts medal in gold is special. While all are rare, others of the French and Indian War sequence are known by a handful of specimens; none of the others are unique. This piece caused a sensation when it appeared in the Ford sale, and no mention of another has been found by any authority, living or dead. In a sale full of highlights, this is clearly the trophy piece. 44.5 mm, 979.0 grains (just over two troy ounces).
Ex: Spink and Son (10/1969); John J. Ford, Jr. Collection, Part XIV (Stack's, 5/2006), lot 47.
From The John W. Adams Collection of French and Indian War Medals.
Seller is donating a portion of their proceeds, and Heritage is donating the same portion of the Buyer's Premium, from the sale of this lot to the National Numismatic Collection at the Smithsonian Institution. See page 3 for details.
