Extremely Rare Betts-420 1759 Victories Medal

Betts-420. Victories of 1759 / Wolfe and Saunders. Bronze. Extremely Fine. Coin turn. A great rarity in the series. By most appearance, this is identical to Betts-418, the standard 1759 Victories medal. The panel that denotes the victors at Quebec as "WOLFE, MONCK(TO)N, TOWNS(EN)D" has been reengraved in the die to read "WOLFE, SAUNDERS." The reverse dies are the same, indeed, the crack visible at the tail of the unicorn supporter that runs to N of POINT is visible as a hairline on Betts-418. At this post-reengraving state, the die is notably cracked from center to G of GUADELOUPE. Unlike the Betts-418, this is struck in coin turn, not medal turn. This particular example shows rich olive brown surfaces, with toned down evidence of the original golden tone, with a couple minor old obverse spots and a short scratch under GI of GEORGIVS. Missing from Ford and LaRiviere, unlisted in Medallic Illustrations, a great rarity in the series. We can find no other record of this variety being offered. 43.2 mm, 526.9 grains.
