    1759 Quebec Taken Medal, Betts-421
    A Classic Rarity in Gold

Betts-421. 1759 Quebec Taken. Gold. Choice Mint State. A spectacular medal, one of just four known and arguably the finest of them. Struck from an extremely early die state with nearly vertical parallel die finish lines still visible on both obverse and reverse. The surfaces are flashy bright yellow gold with light pastel toning around devices, a beautiful effect. Some light evidence of handling is seen, minor hairlines that should not be confused with the die finish, a few little marks under Britannia's chin. Prominent collaring mark at 3:00 relative to the obverse, the same location as other SPAC medals seen. A well preserved masterpiece, one of the most important of the French and Indian War medals.
The fall of Quebec was the key to the fall of America, and this classically inspired effort of John Pingo (imitating the Judea Capta series) rises to the occasion. We note just four examples of this medal in gold: the LaRiviere specimen, which reappeared in Ford (who, up to 2001, had not been successful in acquiring a gold example; it was the last Betts piece he acquired); the example sold by Stack's in 2002; and the example given to General George Townshend, ex J. Douglas Ferguson Collection, now impounded in the Glenbow Museum in Calgary. When this piece was sold in 1994, none had been offered at auction in over a generation. 39.9 mm, 547.2 grains.
Ex: Jeffrey Hoare (Auction 29, 2/1994), lot 582.
