    Description

1762 Betts-443 Bronze Morro Castle Medal

Betts-443. 1762 Morro Castle. Bronze. Choice About Uncirculated. Lovely chocolate brown with obverse highlights of rose and pale blue gathering around devices and rims, while the reverse tone is dominated by blue with hints of violet. The surfaces are of nice overall quality, with good original reflectivity despite some very well-hidden hairlines and some natural scattered pits in the cast planchet, prominent behind Velasco's head. No marks or spots are seen, the rims and edges are sound, and the in-hand appeal is excellent. The thin central obverse die crack is only visible here in very early form below the collar line and on the cravat. This is a superb quality example, as most in this composition appeared to have been distributed non-numismatically and thus carelessly handled. 49.4 mm, 840.8 grains.
    Ex: NASCA (3/1982), lot 2226.
