    Description

1763 Defense of Morro Castle, MS62
    Betts-443, Silver

Betts-443. 1763 Defense of Morro Castle. Silver. MS62 NGC. 49.6 mm, 48 gm. NGC Photo Certificate included. Signed by Tomas Francisco Prieto on the obverse, a medallist, painter, and line-engraver. King Charles III appointed Prieto as the kingdom's Mint Superintendent, with the task to improve the coinage. A rare medal, commemorating the defense of Morro Castle in Havana, this piece depicts two Spanish officers, Velasco and Gonzalez. Morro Castle was the fort defending the channel entrance of Havana, Cuba. The Battle of Havana pitted the Spanish against the British from June to August 1762, with the British emerging victorious. Gonzalez and Velasco defended the castle mightily, both dying in the cause. The 1763 Treaty of Paris returned Cuba to the Spanish.

Pleasing rose and light blue-green toning appears on portions of this nicely preserved example. Few contact marks are present and they do not pose a distraction on this beautifully designed medal. It is believed there are only two or three dozen surviving examples.
    Ex: John J. Ford, Jr. (Stack's, 5/2006), lot 121.
