    Description

    Betts-5 1559 Marriage Medal
Philip II and Isabella of Valois

Betts-5. 1559 Marriage of Philip II and Isabella of Valois. Bronze, cast. XF. 38.4 mm, 1.8 mm thick, 15.8 gm. Medal turn. Poggini's Philip II bust is continued from the earlier Peace of Cambrai medals, the reverse portraying Isabella of Valois, bride and marital trophy of the Peace of Cambrai (Cateau-Cambrecis). Delightfully high reliefs despite a thin planchet, the cheeks of king and queen showing sharp indentations. Saddle-brown patina shows highlights of red-gold.

    John W. Adams Commentary
"Cast in exceptionally high relief and chased. Fine detail. Signed 'J. PAVL. POG. F.' on obverse and reverse. Elizabeth of Valois was the third wife of Philip II; they married in 1559. Indentations on cheeks of both portraits may mark the grip where the piece was held while the edge was patterned or perhaps the edge markings are the seam where two thin shells were joined. Interesting craftsmanship in any event."
Ex: CICF (Ponterio & Associates, 4/1997), lot 9.
