    Description

    Earl of Chatham, Mint State
    Betts-523, Bronze

Betts-523. Earl of Chatham. Bronze. Mint State. 37.1 mm, 23.2 gm. Engraved by Kirk. The surrounding text on the obverse translates as, "William Pitt, Earl of Chatham: the glory and the beloved of his country." A bust of Pitt appears at center, facing right, wearing a toga fastened with a brooch. The reverse features a central design of a standing woman weeping while leaning on an urn upon a pedestal. The British shield rests upon the pedestal. Betts translates the surrounding text as, "Freely, Why should there be any shame or limit to our regret at his loss." Pitt's dates of birth and death are also listed. Deep toning is present on this medal, particularly on the reverse, with the colors including hues of deep red-pink, rich blue-green, and vibrant yellow-gold. The piece exhibits a sharp strike, adding to the appeal.
