    Description

Betts-524. 1773 William Pitt/Commodore Howe. Brass. Fine. 24.5 mm, 3.5 gm. Unsigned. A smaller piece, this medal includes a bust of Pitt three-quarters to the left. The legend is, THE RIGHT HONOr WILLIAM PITT. The reverse follows the same design, with a bust of Howe and the text, THE RIGHT HONOr COMMODORE HOWE. Commodore Richard Howe and his brother, General William Howe, commanded British forces during the American Revolution. They also engaged in peace negotiations with the Americans. Commodore Howe was known for his sympathy for the American Colonies and had met with Benjamin Franklin, an acquaintance of his sister. The appointment of a new peace commission, guided by the Earl of Carlisle, angered him greatly and he tendered his resignation. He then became a vocal critic of the government under Lord North. The portraits reveal significant wear on this example, particularly on the reverse. Areas of orange, red, and green toning add to the eye appeal of this piece, primarily on the reverse. A few small hair thin marks are present on that side.
