    Description

    (1775) Deeds of Peace, AU
    Betts-531, Bronze

Betts-531. (1775) Deeds of Peace. Bronze. AU. 40.2 mm, 29.5 gm. Obverse signed by Lewis Pingo. A lovely medal, this piece commemorates William Penn, the Quaker leader and founder of Pennsylvania who championed religious freedom among other causes. A right-facing bust of Penn appears on the obverse along with his birth and death dates, 1644 and 1718. BY DEEDS OF PEACE appears on the reverse along with PENNSYLVANIA SETLED (sic) 1681 in the exergue. A standing man facing right appears at left, presumably Penn, shaking hands with a Native American. Penn was known for his good relations with the Lenape Indians. Lustrous rich chocolate brown surfaces provide this piece with strong visual appeal. A small rim cud appears on the obverse near 2 o'clock and a tiny rim dent is present on the obverse near 5 o'clock. Although a few scattered marks exist, they are quite minor.
