    Description

    1775 Lord North, AU
    Betts-551, Silver

Betts-551. 1775 Lord North. Silver. AU. 36.5 mm, 19.5 gm. Obverse signed Isaac Gossett and John Kirk. Gossett (1713-99) was part of a notable London family of modellers in wax. His wax medallions were used by Kirk and others to make dies. Lord North served as Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1770-82. North is depicted facing left on this medal. The surrounding text translates as, "Frederick, Baron North, Knight of the Order of the Garter." The decorative reverse features North's Arms and includes a ribbon with the motto of the Order of the Garter. Betts translates the text as, "First Lord of the Treasury, Chancellor of the Exchequer, and of Oxford University." Deeply toned in shades of blue, gold, and peach, this medal retains a pleasing degree of field reflectivity. Hairlines are present.
    Ex: Spink & Son, Ltd. (6/1967); John J. Ford, Jr. (Stack's, 5/2006), lot 409.
