    Betts-552 Variant, Unique White Metal Shells

    Betts-552 variant. 1772 Captain James Cook. White Metal, shells. XF. Obverse 43.5 mm, 3.0 gm.; Reverse 43.7 mm, 2.8 gm. Obverse signed by John Westwood (1774-1850), a medallist in Sheffield, known for his dies depicting leading men of the time, which were used to embellish snuffboxes. These two unique shells represent the pre-production design of the medal. The obverse is signed WESTWOOD F under the truncation on the obverse, though it would later be changed to B:F on the production dies. A split is present along the exergual line on the reverse.
