Betts-564. 1779 Keppel Vindicated. Copper. VF. 34.2 mm, 14.2 gm. Unsigned. A three-quarters right-facing bust of the Honorable Augustus Keppel Admiral appears on the obverse of this medal. The reverse includes the text, JUSTICE TRIUMPHANT and MALICE DEFEATED, with Feb:11:1779 in the exergue. Justice is depicted standing with a sword and scales while trampling Malice. A ship of war appears at left. Keppel sailed with Anson on his voyage around the world from 1741-44. He was later tried by Court Martial involving an action off Ushant in 1778, but he prevailed. Though this medal displays wear, the level of detail remaining is greater than generally seen, adding to the appeal of this piece. A small depression appears above Keppel's head and the surfaces display a degree of porosity.
