    Description

Betts-587. 1781 Battle of Doggersbank. Silver. XF. 45.0 mm, 30.4 gm. Reverse signed by Johann Georg Holtzhey. The Battle of Doggersbank took place on August 5, 1781 between English and Dutch fleets, during the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War, related to the American Revolutionary War. Both sides of this medal display detailed designs. The silver medals were awarded to the captains of the vessels participating in the battle, while a gold medal was presented to the commanding officer, Rear Admiral J.A. Zoutman. The obverse includes WOLTER JAN BARON BENTINCK along the top rim, with text in the exergue translating as, "Walter John, Baron Bentinck; wounded as Captain on the 5th, died as Rear Admiral and Aide on the 24th; buried Aug. 28, 1781." The central design features a funeral urn and cypress wreath, with numerous other items represented, including the Admiral's ship, the Batavier. The reverse text at top translates as, "Recompense of valor," while the text in exergue is "By high authority." The intricately engraved center includes a circular monument with text translating as, "For Doggersbank," surrounded by flags and a variety of weaponry. This lovely example features areas of rich toning. Golden-orange is the predominant color, with splashes of sea-green and red also appearing. Areas of luster are present, with the surfaces revealing moderate hairlines.
