    Description

    1782 Frisia Recognition, AU
    Betts-602, Silver

Betts-602. 1782 Frisia Recognition. Silver. AU. 44.1 mm, 29.6 gm. Obverse signed by B.C.V. Calker of Belgium. His work was not considered to be of quality for the most part and primarily involved local subjects. However, this medal and his 1783 Treaty of Paris medal (Betts-613) are among his best works. The attractive obverse design includes three standing figures. A Frisian in ancient armor appears at center and is grasping the hand of the Indian maiden, symbolizing America, to his right. Below the maiden's feet are the links from a broken chain and she is depicted trampling on a sceptre. The warrior's back is turned to a female figure representing Great Britain. An angel flies above the figures, presenting the free hat of the Netherlands to America. The reverse includes a small shield being held by a hand at the top and Dutch text below. This lustrous medal displays rich toning on the obverse, with the shades including deep gold, copper, and blue-green along with a few small splashes of red. Scattered marks are present, primarily in the obverse fields, and hairlines appear.
