    Description

    1783 Treaty of Paris, AU
    Betts-611, Bronze

Betts-611. 1783 Treaty of Paris. Bronze. AU. 41.9 mm, 29.8 gm. Obverse signed by Nicholas Marie Gatteaux. Reverse signed by Du Vivier. Gatteaux (1751-1832) was a medallist in Paris. He was employed by the Paris Medal-Mint and was elected Medallist to the King in 1781. A right-facing bust of Louis XVI, Most Christian King appears on the obverse of this medal. The reverse features a personification of Peace, standing with an olive branch in her right hand and a horn of plenty in her left, while resting her foot on the prow of a galley. The legend translates as, "Peace between France and England, at Versailles, 1783." The obverse exhibits several cuds at the rim. Light mahogany color appears overall, with closer examination revealing rich shades of violet, cerulean-blue, and light yellow. A few scattered marks, primarily in the reverse fields, pose minimal distraction if any on this gorgeous piece.
