Betts-97. 1702 Expedition at Vigo Bay. Silver. AU55 NGC. 37.1 mm, 17.9 gm. Struck by John Croker (1670-1741), also known as Johann Crocker, he served as Chief-engraver at the London Mint from 1705 until his death. A left-facing portrait of Queen Anna appears on the obverse of this medal. The reverse legend translates as, "The French and Spanish fleets taken and burnt," with "At Vigo, Oct. 12, 1702" appearing in the exergue. A view of Vigo harbor, including vessels burning within the harbor and ships before the entrance near a fort, is depicted on the reverse. The medium gray surfaces of this splendid Choice AU medal include attractive toning in shades of blue-green, yellow, copper, electric-blue, and lavender.
