    1697 French Victories Medal
    Bronze, Damascene
    Unlisted in Betts

Betts-Unlisted. 1697 Victory the Companion of the French. Bronze, damascene. XF. 69.6 mm, 125.8 gm. By Joseph Roettiers. This triumphal medal is an expanded version of the 41-mm pieces described above. The obverse is wholly different, presenting Louis the Great, Most Christian King in an ornate cuirass with Medusa head at center and luxuriant locks, laurel crown. The reverse shows the winged Victory of the smaller medals inscribing her three victory shields in script: Barcelona, Spain; Atham, Flanders; and Cartagena in the New World, What makes this medal truly exceptional are its surfaces, copper-red fields and meticulously damascened or parcel-gilt reliefs. Exacting hand work has gilded the tops of the letters in the legends, Arabic date 1697 and all devices with remarkable skill. Some breaks are seen in the lacquered fields. A sharp die crack meanders across the lower part of the bust.
    Ex: John J. Ford, Jr., Part 13 (Stack's, 1/2006), lot 790.
