    Description

Extremely Rare 1759 Death of Wolfe Medal
    'Before Quebec'

Betts-unlisted. 1759 Death of Wolfe. Pinchbeck. Choice Very Fine. Coin turn. The rarest medal in the current offering, clearly from the same workshop as the 1758 Boscawen medals struck in Pinchbeck. Glossy olive brown with deep golden highlights. A spatter of microscopic red paint specks are seen on the right side of the obverse, thin old scratch at base of Wolfe's hair ribbon, another vertical one on his arm and a shorter scratch above the spires of Quebec. A stunning historical piece, showing the fallen Wolfe on the obverse (in highly stylized form) with a city view of Quebec (also stylized) on the reverse. A horizontal die crack through the date below the obverse exergual line may explain why this variety is so incredibly rare. This is the sole example of this medal noted by most authorities in the series; it may well be unique. 37.1 mm, 184.4 grains.
