1761 Belle Isle Medal in Silver, Betts-Unlisted

Betts-unlisted. 1761 Belle Isle Taken. Silver. WILLIAM PITT ADMINISTRING edge. About Uncirculated. Ideal medium silver gray with faint blue and green highlights over lustrous, reflective surfaces. Somewhat handled, with light scattered contact points and hairlines, though no major evils have befallen this and the in-hand appeal is superb. No collaring mark is visible, though it would have likely been smoothed off to allow for the edge lettering to be placed. Not properly part of the Betts series, though the obverse die is the same as that used on Betts-411. Belle Isle is a tiny island off the coast of Brittany, taken in 1761 and then given back to France in exchange for Minorca in 1763. Ironically, the residents of Belle Isle in 1761 were largely Acadians who were displaced from the Canadian maritimes in the 1750s but could not seem to escape this worldwide war. 40.6 mm, 471.5 grains.
