    Description

    1720 John Law, XF
    Betts-122, Silver

Betts-122. 1720 John Law. Silver. XF. 32.2 mm, 14.3 gm. Unsigned. Featuring the same obverse die used for Betts-124, this piece features a half-length portrait of John Law holding shares in notes. The reverse consists of text, which Betts translates as, "Sunday, by the notes of the Bank we empty all the purses. Monday, we buy our shares; Tuesday, we are millionaires; Wednesday, we arrange our ménage; Thursday, we start our equipage; Friday, we go to the ball, and Saturday, we go to the Hospital, i.e., the Poorhouse." Blue, green, violet, and gold are among the colors present on this lightly toned piece. Hairlines and a few scattered minor marks appear, but pose little distraction, if any.
Ex: Spink (3/20/1985); Lucien M. LaRiviere Collection, Part II (Bowers and Merena, 3/2001), lot 2039.
