    Description

    1716 Chamber of Justice, XF
    Betts-125, Silver

Betts-125. 1716 Chamber of Justice. Silver. XF. 41.5 mm, 35.5 gm. I. Le Blanc of Paris engraved the obverse die while Jean Du Vivier, born in Liege in 1687 and dying in Paris in 1761, was responsible for the reverse die. A beautifully designed piece, this medal reveals attractive toning in light shades of golden-orange, sea-green, and copper-peach. A right-facing bust of Louis XV appears on the obverse with the legend LUDOVICUS XV D G FR ET NAV REX. The particularly appealing reverse displays Hercules on the verge of bludgeoning Cacus, a thief. Hairlines and minor marks do not detract from the eye appeal of this lovely example.
    Ex: Jacques Schulman (11/1971), lot 1451; John J. Ford, Jr. (Stack's, 1/2006), lot 599.
