    Description

1778 Rhode Island Ship Medal, XF
    Betts-563, Breen-1142, W-1745, High R.6, Pewter

    Betts-563. 1778 Rhode Island Ship Medal. Pewter. XF. Breen-1142, W-1745, High R.6.
32.9 mm, 8.6 gm. Unsigned. There are three major subtypes of the Rhode Island Ship medal. The extremely rare variety has VLUGTENDE on the lower exergue, meaning fleeing. The word may have been intended for the reverse depicting the colonists fleeing from Conanicut Island. VLUGTENDE was effaced from struck examples for the second variety. The final major variety replaces VLUGTENDE with a wreath on the die. Most Rhode Island Ship tokens are struck in brass or copper. Sharply struck in pewter, this example of the third variety retains attractive color, providing exceptional eye appeal. A few areas of wear are present on the high points.
Purchased from Leonard Finn; Previously from Anthony Terranova.
From The John W. Adams Collection.
