    Description

1854 G$1 Type One Gold Dollar AU50 Uncertified; 1847-O Quarter Eagle AU55 Cleaned, the reverse is rotated 160 degrees in relation to the obverse; 1852 Quarter Eagle MS60 Rim Nick, Cleaned; 1853 Quarter Eagle AU55 Cleaned; 1855 Quarter Eagle AU50 Cleaned; 1860 New Reverse Quarter Eagle MS60 Cleaned; 1861 Quarter Eagle AU50 Cleaned; 1858 Double Eagle AU50 Rim Damaged, Cleaned; and an 1858-S Double Eagle AU50 Cleaned. All coins were excavated at Sienna Plantation, Texas in June of 1998. They are part of two caches discovered by the consignor while treasure hunting with a metal detector. These gold coins, as well as the 1847-C Quarter Eagle, 1843-C Half Eagle, and 1839 Type of 1840 Eagle that we are offering individually in this catalog, comprised the first cache. A group of silver coins that were impaired from exposure to fire comprised the second. Both caches were located near the foundation of an old home that the consignor believes was destroyed in a fire. The dates of the coins, as well as their condition, suggest that they went into the ground sometime in the early 1860s. The story of this fascinating discovery is told in two magazine articles: the first in the April 1999 edition of Western and Eastern Treasures and the second in the 1999 Annual edition of Western and Eastern Treasures: Silver and Gold.
