1916-D 50C MS 62, both sides of this popular first-year issue exhibit untoned, matte-like surfaces that are too subdued for a higher Mint State rating; 1936 MS 64, vibrant, untoned surfaces are just a couple stray milling marks from Gem quality; 1937 MS 63; 1940 MS 63; 1941 MS 64; 1943 MS 63; 1947 MS 64, milky steel-violet toning; and a 1950 MS 63, attractively toned from storage in a paper envelope.
