Splendid, Gem Example of the 1836 Pattern Gold Dollar--The Akers Plate Coin

1836 Gold Dollar, Judd-67, Pollock-70, R.5, PR 65 PCGS. Gold dollar pattern with a radiated cap on the obverse; the reverse has 1 D. in the center surrounded by a palm branch. Struck in gold with a plain edge. A fabulous example of this always popular gold pattern. Very few gold patterns are available to collectors, the Judd-67 is occasionally offered in the marketplace because an undetermined number of restrikes were produced in the 1860s. This lovely example is deeply mirrored in the fields with a faint accent of reddish patina on each side. A couple of tiny planchet flaws are seen on the obverse and on the reverse several minute lint marks are noted--these imperfections are the tracers that can be used to identify this particular coin as the plate coin in David Akers' 1975 work, United States Gold Patterns, page 7. (PCGS# 60067)
