Unique O-Mint Ten-Dollar "Splasher"--Off the Market For More Than Forty Years

1841-60 New Orleans Ten-Dollar Uniface Reverse Trial Impression. Struck in tin, this "splasher" is a plain edge die trial from the New Orleans Mint. It is thoroughly detailed, and the bold O-mintmark is well positioned under the left claw of the eagle and to the left of the point of the arrow feather. Struck on a broad 32 mm. splasher that allows for a broad, uneven border. Unlisted in Adams-Woodin, Judd, Taxay-Scott, and Pollock. Apparently the only reference that has ever listed this piece was the Standard Catalogue of United States Coins beginning with the 1954-55 edition, where it is described as: "EAGLE. "O" MINT. (Circa 1841) Reverse only struck on a thin planchet. W. Metal......Unique." Most likely entered in the Catalogue by the then youthful Walter Breen. Wayte Raymond, publisher of the Standard Catalogue, was scrupulous in his selection of pieces for inclusion in the Catalogue, then the major reference for U.S. coinage.
Few branch mint die trials are known, virtually none from so early a date. This extraordinary rarity was part of the famed Virgil M. Brand collection, thus adding a choice pedigree in addition to its listing in the Standard Catalogue. This is an opportunity to acquire a unique rarity that has not been seen on the numismatic market for more than 40 years.
A small brown envelope accompanies, allegedly written by Walter Breen. (PCGS# 60058)
