Unique 1861 Double Eagle Die Trial

1861 Double Eagle, Judd-289, Pollock-347, Unique?, PR 63 Brown PCGS. Die trials striking for the 1861 double eagle. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. There are two types of 1861 double eagles struck in copper. One type was produced without a collar, the other (this one) made with a restraining collar. This extraordinary coin is apparently unique. According to the Judd reference the last time it changed hands was in October 1979. Although the surfaces are brown, there is an underlying autumn leaves iridescence that is very attractive. Lightly hairlined at one time, but this is only visible now with magnification, the layers of color serving to conceal any traces to the unaided eye. A memorable die trial that may not come onto the market again for many years.
    Ex: King Farouk (Sotheby's, 2/54), lot 1773; Kagin's, 5/72, lot 1410. (PCGS# 60289)
