    Description

Possibly Unique White Metal Washington Nickel Pattern, Judd-479 Ex: Crosby and Garrett

1866 Five-Cents, Judd-479, Pollock-569, R.8, PR 64 PCGS. Washington device in the center of the obverse with the date below and the motto above. The second 6 in the date was punched from a significantly larger number punch than the three-digit gang punch used for the first three numbers. The reverse was struck from the regular proof dies without rays. Struck in white metal with a plain edge. The planchet is broader than usual and the surfaces display a dull pewter-like color overall with the reverse somewhat brighter than the obverse. Upon close examination one notices a few tiny flecks of carbon, none of which are worthy of individual mention. A short, diagonal planchet lamination can be seen in the field to the left of the ball of the 5 on the reverse.
To emphasize the rarity of white metal coins, consider that of the 13 nickels struck in white metal, Judd lists 10 as R.8, 2 as R.7, and one unknown. Pollock lists 3 as unique, 9 as R.7, and the remaining coins as "unplated or picture too poor for identification." None of the white metal nickels are included in the holdings of the ANA, ANS, Byron Reed, Museum of Connecticut History, or Smithsonian. While this piece is listed as R.8, it actually may be unique as no one seems to know where the other piece is today that is listed in Pollock.
    Ex: S.S. Crosby; Garrett Collection (B&R, 3/80), lot 988; Auction '84 (Stack's, 7/84), lot 1225. (PCGS# 60479)
