    1863 Reeded Edge Cent, Judd-300, PR 65

1863 Indian Cent, Judd-300, Pollock-360, R.7, PR 65 NGC. Regular dies for the Indian cent and struck in copper-nickel, but with a reeded edge. The reeded edge was possibly applied to combat fear of counterfeiting or had some connection with hoarding during the Civil War. Other advanced nations that adopted nickel alloy coinage in this era used protective edge devices, including Belgium's innovative copper-nickel 5 and 10 centime pieces with an early security edge. Reeding was never adopted for regular U.S. cents, making this a perennially popular, unusually rare, and sought-after type. One of unfortunate aspects of certified coins is that, in cases such as this, the most distinctive feature of the piece is lost to the viewer. The surfaces are subtly reflective and display lovely steel-blue and orange accents.
