    Description

1863 Washington Head Two-Cent Piece, Judd-305, P-370, R.4, PR 63 Red and Brown. 88.10 grains. Head of Washington on the obverse with the experimental motto GOD AND OUR COUNTRY above and date below. The reverse is similar to the adopted design but the word CENTS is curved at a sharp angle. Struck in copper or bronze with a plain edge. These heavier pieces are the more common of the two weight variances for this pattern, but curiously, this coin does not have the 180 degree die rotation observed on all the other heavier pieces. Much of the original cherry-red color is still seen surrounding the devices with a steel-gray elsewhere. There are a couple of larger carbon spots noted on the obverse that hold down the grade of this piece. (PCGS# 60305)
