Description

Beautiful Aluminum Striking of Longacre's Design for the 1867 Five-Cents

1867 Five-Cents, Judd-561, Pollock-622, R.5-6, PR 66 PCGS. Longacre's design that shows Liberty facing left with four feathers and four stars in a headdress, the date below, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above. The reverse has a large, ornate shield with a large Roman numeral V over it, the motto above. Struck in aluminum with a plain edge. This is an exceptionally attractive aluminum pattern that is bright and shows no traces of oxidation. A curious occurrence on this piece is that it shows horizontal die striations in both the fields and over the devices. While not a particularly rare pattern, this piece is currently (5/96) tied as the finest certified, being tied with one other PCGS coin. A near-flawless pattern of great beauty.
    Ex: Garden State Convention Auction (6/84), lot 164; Salisbury and Woods (B&M, 9/94), lot 934. (PCGS# 60561)
