    Description

Copper Die Trial For the 1866 Half Eagle, Probably Ex: Farouk

1866 Half Eagle, Judd-546, Pollock-610, R.8, PR 64 Red and Brown PCGS. Regular die trials issue from 1866 for the half eagle. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. The only specimen listed in the Pollock reference is from the Farouk Collection. This is probably that coin, but there is no plate or description from that sale to reference the piece for certain. The surfaces have a deep brown patina over both sides with occasional flashes of underlying olive-green and red iridescence seen here and there. Identifiable by a small spot by star 1 and another by star 10. (NGC ID# 29GZ, PCGS# 60546)
