Description

1866 Half Eagle Die Trial, Ex: Farouk

1866 Half Eagle, Judd-546, Pollock-610, R.8, PR 60 Cleaned, Brown. Regular die trials issue from 1866 for the half eagle. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. The only specimen listed in the Pollock reference is from the Farouk Collection. A couple of years ago we offered another of these pieces and theorized that it was the Farouk coin (it had identifying spots at stars 1 and 10), but now we know that was in error and this present piece is the Farouk coin as it is accompanied by the flip from that sale. (If there is any further doubt, this coin was vigorously scrubbed as was much of Farouk's collection). Three-quarters of the obverse shows a very high knife rim, just dropping to the normal height around the date. Multi-hued and brassy looking from the cleaning, nevertheless, an exceptionally rare die trial and one of perhaps only two pieces known.
    Ex: Farouk Collection (Sotheby's, 1954), lot 1796; Sol Kaplan; B.C. Sayers. (NGC ID# 29GZ, PCGS# 60546)
