    Description

1864 Indian Cent, Judd-356, Pollock-426, R.6(?), PR 64. Regular die trials issue without the L on the ribbon. Struck in a copper-tin alloy with a plain edge. Bright, lustrous surfaces with a trace of flyspecking on the obverse.
This coin was consigned as a Judd-354 which is a bronze-aluminum alloy. We had our doubts and had Metallurgical Engineering Services in Dallas do a non-destructive elemental analysis of the piece. They found that the coin was composed of 91.43% copper, 8.23% tin, 0.34% iron, with a trace of phosphorus. The closest match in the Pollock reference is his number 426 which is listed as having 90% copper, 10% tin alloy. According to Taxay these die trials are supposed to weigh 45 grains. This piece is close at 43.82 grains. (PCGS# 60426)
